Centers

A Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is a focal point of competence and knowledge on European Union subjects. A Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence gathers the expertise and competences of high-level experts and aims at developing synergies between the various disciplines and resources in European studies, as well as at creating joint transnational activities and structural links with academic institutions in other countries. It also ensures openness to civil society. Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence have a major role in reaching out to students from faculties not normally dealing with European Union issues as well as to policy makers, civil servants, organised civil society and the general public at large.

    The European & Eurasian Studies Certificate program is open to all who have an interest in any aspect of European civilization, past or present.

    It is an interdisciplinary program that draws on a broad range of courses from throughout FIU to complement a student’s own interests.

    Approved study-abroad courses, including those offered by the Honors College, may be accepted for certificate credit.

    The program also offers a senior colloquium, “European Identities”, that allows students the opportunity to engage in research on topics of their own choosing in close conjunction with a member of the Program Faculty.

    The certificate program is open to all students enrolled at FIU and to interested individuals in the community.

    About

    Situated within the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies, the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence engages with Europe’s place in a changing world with an American reference point, but a broader focus. It considers the bilateral relationship (specifically the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations); triangular diplomacy towards Russia; transatlantic competition over global rules (particularly with respect to data privacy); and the EU’s role in peacekeeping.

    The Centre is designed to leverage existing expertise at Georgia Tech; to foster new inter-disciplinary collaboration; and to engage audiences within and beyond the campus. To that end it draws together an interdisciplinary team of scholars from across the Ivan Allen College, as well as from the Scheller College of Business

    The activities of the Centre include public talks, academic workshops, an international symposium and a working paper series. The main research activities are structured around three work packages focusing on:

    • Triangular Diplomacy: Strategic Implications of a Resurgent Russia for the European Union and the United States;
    • 21st Century Trade Politics: The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership as a Test Case;
    • Protecting Privacy: Transatlantic Perspectives and Challenges

    About

    The University of Illinois European Union Center (EUC) was established in 1998 with support from the European Commission, as one of the ten original EU Centers in the United States. In 2003, the US Department of Education designated the EUC as a Title VI National Resource Center. In 2011-15, the European Union recognized the EUC as a European Union Center of Excellence, and in 2015-18 as a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence.

    Since its inception, the European Union Center has become the focal point on campus for teaching, research, and outreach programs on the European Union. The EUC brings together faculty and students from diverse disciplines across campus to promote the study of the EU and transatlantic relations, making it one of the most comprehensive EU centers in the US. The EUC is privileged to work with Center-affiliated faculty, many of whom are internationally-renowned experts in their fields. The EUC also works closely with many other institutions to provide high quality programs to a variety of audiences. We also support an annual competition for the “Larry Neal Prize for Excellence in EU Studies.”

    About

    The Center for European Studies (CES) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill advances understanding of the social, political, and economic events that shape contemporary Europe. The overarching mandate of the Center is to enhance undergraduate and graduate instruction in contemporary European studies, to promote scholarship and training for students and faculty from all disciplines and professional schools, and to stimulate institutional and public awareness of Europe’s economic, cultural, and political importance on campus, in North Carolina, and across the nation. Established in 1994, CES is the largest of the area studies centers at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Center is one of only five in the nation to be designated as both a National Resource Center by the US Department of Education and a European Union Center of Excellence by the European Union. CES is consistently recognized among the top centers for European studies in the country for its innovative programming. In 2013, for example, the Center earned the European Union Center of Excellence Outstanding Outreach Award for its collaborative Global Webfriends program, which links UNC Transatlantic Masters students living abroad with K-12 students throughout North Carolina.

    CES works with more than 130 core and affiliate faculty across the university, providing support for curricular, research, and programmatic endeavors impacting more than 25,000 students annually. The Center is home to UNC’s undergraduate Contemporary European Studies Major (EURO), the only bachelor’s degree of its kind in the state, and to UNC’s Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) program, an innovative program enabling students to use world languages in a variety of courses across disciplines. We also serve as the lead institution in the Transatlantic Masters Program (TAM), which offers three specializations in transatlantic studies in consortium with 10 universities across Europe and one in Turkey. CES further sustains instruction by funding course development grants across UNC’s academic departments and professional schools. The Center advances scholarship on Europe through workshops, conferences, visiting speaker series, and research grants to UNC faculty and students. Finally, we share resources and expertise about contemporary Europe and the EU with local, state, and federal government agencies, K-12 schools, community colleges, minority-serving institutions, private sector organizations, and the public at large. Our outreach initiatives serve more than 15,000 people every year.

    About

    The Jean Monnet European Union Center of Excellence (JMEUCE) at the University of Wisconsin was established in 2015. Affiliates of the Wisconsin Jean Monnet EU Center of Excellence have collectively demonstrated the role of the EU as a major player in addressing global challenges, working to understand the internal development of the EU itself as a multi-level structure of governance, including how it is facing the challenges of parliamentary deliberation across multiple variations in the member states. Wisconsin’s JMEUCE sponsored 48 events and workshops in 2015-2017, featuring specialists on EU and transatlantic affairs. Their faculty continue to publish articles and edited volumes containing significant new scholarship on the EU and its global importance via academic journals, digital components for courses, monographs, continuing education courses, press releases, etc. In 2015-2016, eight upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses on the EU were taught through International Studies, Political Science, and Public Policy with 263 enrollees. In 2015-2017, the Wisconsin Jean Monnet EU Center of Excellence provided competitive funding for 12 graduate and undergraduate students. These students will present original research and cutting-edge scholarship on knowledge of the European Union and its global relevance, through these awards.
