Description

Workshop on EU International Development Cooperation post-2020
The workshop aims to investigate how the EU is reacting and adapting to internal and external challenges, mostly focusing on the impacts of Brexit. It will bring together academics and policy practitioners to investigate questions related to how the UK leaving will impact EU cooperation with developing countries (for example in terms of financing), whether there is any scope for continued, bespoke British involvement in various EU development initiatives (such as the new EU-ACP convention and the EDF, the European Neighbourhood Policy, and wider European efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals), and how the guiding policy frameworks are likely to evolve without British influence in the medium to longer term. How do these Brexit-induced changes influence the EU’s ability to shape the international development landscape? Beyond the challenges caused by Brexit however, the workshop also welcomes contributions dealing more broadly with the EU’s reactions to challenges such as unmanaged mass migration, terrorism and climate change, in the context of the new ACP-EU partnership agreement and the new multiannual financial framework after 2020. To what extent do external challenges hamper the ability of the EU to realize its vision for development as set out in the renewed Consensus on Development, the revised Neighbourhood Policy and the EU Global Strategy?
